Long-tailed Duck (male), Grafham Water, Cambs (4th December 2005).   What a stunning bird and almost certainly my best view of this species.

Green Heron (first winter), Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey (19th November 2005).   With its striking plumage and outrageously coloured legs this heron looked superb in the sharp November sunshine.   Click here for more images.

Barn Owl, Cottenham, Cambs (23rd October 2005).   Barn Owls are present in good numbers around Cottenham, but few are as obliging as this individual which stayed put while I drove home to fetch my camera.

Common Seal, Norfolk (11th September 2005).   Digitally enhanced.   Taken in dreadful conditions - appalling light, wind and light drizzle.   Thank goodness for image stabilisation!

Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Blakeney Point, Norfolk (4th September 2005).   The first here since 1899.   Despite their reputation this individual was not particularly tame.   It flew off high on several occasions after being spooked by planes and large gulls.   Even Common Gulls evoked a crouching response.

Long-eared Owl, South Cambs (June 2005).   This image is the result of a number of recent attempts to photograph this species.   Although only a record shot, the result is surprisingly good as the image was taken at 20:40 when the light was poor and the bird was perched in the shade.   For those interested in the technical details the image was taken at 1/400th of a second at F4.5 with the ASA set to 1000.

Marsh Fritillary nectaring on Marsh Thistle, Dorset (5th June 2005).   The Fritillary appears to be dusted with what might be pollen.   Any comments would be welcome.

Starling, Cottenham, Cambs (May 2005).   This picture was taken to test the auto-focus functionality of my camera after I had loaded new software.   The new software apparently addresses some auto-focus problems.   It seems to have done the trick.
