Female Green Woodpecker, Aldreth, Cambridgeshire (27th December 2008).   This bird was photographed early on a frosty morning and had been attracted to an apple wedged into a fork in an apple tree.

Male Great Spotted Woodpecker, Aldreth, Cambridgeshire (December 2008).   This image was taken while attempting to photograph smaller visitors to our feeders.   It was impossible to fit the entire bird in the frame.   Suprisingly, it was more relaxed at the sound of the camera shutter than Blue and Great Tits.

Teneral male Scarce Chaser, Ouse Washes, Cambridgeshire (15th June 2008).   This is one species in which the female and teneral male are more striking than the adult male.

Grass Snake, Aldreth, Cambridgeshire (31st May 2008).   Discovering this snake in our pond this morning was a real thrill.   It easily matched the recent excitements in Finland.

Male Peregrine, Dorset (April 2008).   This bird is flying flat out in level flight   A good test of the camera's AI auto focus.

Osprey in-off the sea, Portland, Dorset (April 2008).   What a fantastic sight to see an Osprey on migration.   It sent the local Herring Gulls wild.

Male Indian Peafowl or Peacock, Brownsea Island, Dorset (31st March 2008).   This bird was displaying amongst tables in the restaurant garden; incongruous but impressive.   It was one of 15+ free ranging birds including 9 causing havoc in the restaurant garden.   It took a group of National Trust staff to evict them.

Robin, Aldreth, Cambridgeshire (23rd March 2008).   With the snow falling one of our garden Robins obligingly played the part.   Looks like the card design for next Christmas is sorted.

Barn Owl, Cambridgeshire (22nd March 2008).   This unusually confiding individual was not bothered by my car and allowed a close approach.   The appearance of some late evening sunshine was a real bonus.

Lesser Yellowlegs, Thornham, Norfolk (14th January 2007).   A very obliging individual which on several occasions came to within 6 feet.   Despite this I don't think that I did it justice.   The visit was also memorable for the sticky mud.   At one point I had to be hauled out of the mud, minus a welly, by Dave and Tim.   Click here for more images.

Red Squirrel, Cumbria (30th December 2006).   It is always great to see these animals at close quarters even if conditions are not ideal for photography.   These record shots were taken in light rain and dreadful light in between heavy showers.   The next challenge is to photograph one away from a feeder.

Long-billed Murrelet, Dawlish, Devon (13th November 2006).   An odd looking bird and a quite extraordinary record.   This is the first time this species has been recorded in Britain and is only the second record for Europe.   Click here for more images.

Whooper Swans in flight, Welney, Norfolk (11th November 2006), against a stormy sky.   You can see mud on their bills, from the field where they had just been feeding.

Little Auk, Snettisham, Norfolk (5th November 2006).   I was hoping to take something better than this standard portrait where the auk looks very like a child's bath toy.   This individual was part of a large influx along the east coast.   Sadly, many must have perished like the one that was found in a fish pond at the RSPB's headquarters at The Lodge.   Click here for more images.

Red-flanked Bluetail, Thorpeness, Suffolk (21st October 2006).  As always a delightful bird to see.   However, it was difficult to photograph as it was always on the move and often in deep shade or high in the canopy.   A lower angle would have been preferable, but I was fortunate to obtain an image at all.   Click here for more images.

Polar Bear, Spitsbergen (June 2006).   This 'arty' image was created by cropping a small area from what was a record shot of a distant Polar Bear and manipulating it in PhotoShop.   Click here for more Spitsbergen images.

Swallowtail, nectaring on Sweet William, Strumpshaw RSPB reserve, Norfolk (18th June 2006).   Technical details : 100 mm, f 8, 1/250 sec, fill-in flash.   This was the first time that I had seen this species nectaring and I was surprised to see that this individual fluttered its wings rapidly, almost continuously, like a moth.
